Traffic engineering department (O32)

The department of traffic engineering deals with research and development in the area of safe road design and management of safe infrastructure. The activity covers both road and railway infrastructures.

The crucial activity of the department is the analysis and remedy of black spots and application of tools of safe infrastructure in practice. Qualified researchers are experienced in designing of arterial roads adjustments and areal traffic calming (e.g. Zones 30, pedestrian zones, cycle roads) and traffic organization. Series of technical standards were published, not only for traffic signing and road marking, but also for traffic calming. Recently, the department is engaged in motorcycle safety from road design perspective as well (e.g. development of safer crash barrier).

Another important part of our work comprises safety inspections, safety audits, and traffic engineering expert opinions. As a commonplace, we organize accredited trainings for clerks and road safety auditors and inspectors.

Railway level crossing safety is integral part of traffic engineering. During last two years, the discipline developed remarkably in the CR and still rapidly progresses. One of our successes is installation and testing of the light barrier (first such model in the CR) at level crossing in Southern Bohemia. Moreover, the device is completed with experimental optic and psychological brake, designed exclusively for use at railway level crossings. Our department also solves illegal behaviour of users, both drivers and pedestrians, at level crossings. The workers of the department are ELCF members, they participate in creation of European standards and related technical rules.
