Economic Evaluation of Externalities Caused by Traffic Accidents (PIARC 2023)

Abstract

The paper aims to present the method of valuation of socio-economic costs of road crashes in Czechia based on the methodology developed and updated by CDV – Transport Research Centre. The updated guidelines reflect the current best practice in the field, as well as standard procedures applied in EU countries. The paper briefly presents the methodological procedure for the valuation of externalities from traffic accidents according to the new methodology. It also describes the valuation of the value of human life in the field of road safety, carried out using the stated preferences approach based on a questionnaire survey. The paper includes an illustrative calculation and valuation in financial units.
